OIC joins global experts in Cairo to reform women’s rights narrative

The General Secretariat of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) participated in a high-level international conference on investment in religious and media discourse and its impact on the protection and empowerment of women in member states, held in Cairo on 1–2 February 2026.

Reported by OIC Official, The conference was held under the auspices of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and attended by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly as well as Grand Imam Ahmed Al-Tayeb of Al-Azhar.

In a recorded speech, OIC Secretary-General Hissein Brahim Taha stated that the rational use of religious discourse and media, based on Islamic values of tolerance, is critical for protecting women’s rights.

He emphasized that women’s empowerment is a key pillar for comprehensive development and social stability in the Islamic world.

He also highlighted the OIC’s commitment to strengthening cooperation between religious institutions, media, and national mechanisms related to women, and urged policies that encourage active participation of women in all areas of life.

The Secretary-General also appreciated Egypt’s efforts in hosting the conference and praised the role of Al-Azhar, the National Council for Women, and the Women’s Development Organization in making the conference a success.

He noted that the outcomes of the Cairo conference are expected to open new pathways for strengthening the status and achievements of women in member states.
